Living question · provisional
Can European electricity grids remain reliable when drought and heat reduce several sources of generation at once?
Electricity security depends on the same scarce water across countries connected by both the grid and the river.
What we currently think
Paks has returned to nominal power. That improves the immediate assessment without establishing long-term drought resilience.

Paks returns to full power
At 4:35pm on August 26, Paks's final reactor returned to nominal power, Hungary's nuclear regulator reports. All units are operating at that level again. For people relying on this electricity, that is a concrete recovery after difficulties caused by the Danube's low level.

Issue 03At Paks, a few centimetres matter
Sink two barges to help a nuclear plant keep running: that is Péter Magyar’s plan for the afternoon of August 14. Reuters puts Paks at about 25% capacity. The announcement establishes neither completion nor a durable recovery. It supplements the stone sill announced on August 12, a longer project intended to raise water near the cooling intake. AP put output just above 10% on August 12: those two snapshots cannot prove the effect of barges whose sinking is still an announcement.
Judgment : Cooling constraints are established. Regional costs, future outage frequency and the role of coordination remain unresolved; Paks adds an engineering test.

- Hungary's government plans interventions on Danube River to keep nuclear plant running
AP puts Paks at just over 10% capacity on August 12 and describes the sill, two possible barges, timetable and government cost and water-level projections. Projected gains are not measured results.
- Romania begins shutdown of nuclear plant's 2nd reactor amid low water levels on Danube River
AP reports that four stone-laden barges failed to maintain the required level at the Bala canal and Cernavoda’s unit 2 underwent a controlled shutdown. Coverage through alternative sources and imports remains a ministry projection.
- Paks nuclear plant may be shut down due to record-low water level of Danube, PM announces
Telex documents record-low water, output reductions, import needs and the operator’s statement that the plant was not prepared for water this low. This is context preceding the new works.
- Water Governance for Climate Resilience in Hungary
The OECD reports that an average 96% of renewable freshwater resources came from abroad in 2001–2020. It also identifies large energy-sector abstraction and missing hydrological analysis in the energy strategy. It does not assess the August works.
- Hungarian PM announces measures for raising Danube water levels at Hungary's only nuclear power plant
Telex reports the planned sill, standby barges and the municipality’s request for a durable cooling-water solution.
- Hungary to sink two barges near nuclear plant to ensure cooling
Reuters puts Paks at about 25% capacity on August 14 and reports that two barges are to be sunk that afternoon. It does not confirm completion.

- Újra névleges teljesítményen üzemel a Paksi Atomerőmű mindegyik blokkja
The nuclear authority reports all units at nominal power after unit 4 returned on August 26 at 16:35. It does not quantify the weir’s contribution.
- Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant operating at full capacity again
Telex describes the phased restart and the prime minister's account of construction; it does not independently measure the sill's causal effect.
