Does heat protection reach the people most exposed in Germany?
The scale of estimated deaths and their concentration among older people make assessing accessible protection urgent.
What we currently think
RKI estimates a heavy heat-related death toll; the effectiveness and accessibility of protection still need examination.

Germany: heat already has a human toll
The number arrives after the scorching days: roughly 14,000 heat-related deaths in Germany, according to the Robert Koch Institute’s August 20 report. The estimate covers the period through August 9. Its 95% prediction interval runs from 12,500 to 15,300. Fourteen thousand is therefore a central estimate, not an observed minimum or the summer’s final toll.
