Living question · provisional
Which adaptations actually reduce European wildfire damage under extreme conditions?
Emissions cuts and adaptation have different budgets, timetables and responsible authorities, but future safety depends on combining them.
What we currently think
The modelling identifies room for adaptation as well as escalating climate risk; operational effectiveness still needs testing.

Europe's wildfire future can still change
A model cannot dispatch firefighters to the right place. It can change what we prepare for them. In research presented by the Potsdam institute on August 20, annual burned area in Europe rises by 39% under a low-emissions scenario and 192% under a high-emissions scenario. The comparison is between modelled averages for 2070–2100 and 2000–2030. These conditional pathways are not a certain toll for next season.
